I'm sharing your observation about Democrats allowing themselves to be painted as cultural extremists. What no one is saying is that many people believe that Democrats care more about drag queen story hour than they do about grocery store prices. And from their messaging, who would disagree?

I'd note as well that although I'm fairly far to the left, even I got annoyed by all the demographic questions in government job applications. It was the little things that added up ... And sank the Democrats.

The majority of America wants Trump and his bravado. I hope for swift consequences, including a quick repeal of Obamacare. Let them eat cake!

I was struck by how few men of all race and age were at the the Harris rally that I attended. The loss of working class men to the Republician is something that we need to stop

What really happened was Pvtin, Musk and other billionaires, as well as autocratic leaders orchestrated a coup. Misinformation and a greedy media was their tool. It worked due to ignarance on the part of half of America. Democracy in devdeveloped countries worldwide are mourning the plight of the USA.

Good analysis Tom, Post COVID inflation drove cost of living through the roof. ALERT: rural red state voters don’t read Paul Klugman, period! The administration stubbornly touted inflation progress to the masses and looked the other way when average families saw their consumer prices continue to increase an average of $3-400 per month. Probably the low propensity voters thought the “win” on stopping inflation meant prices at the grocery store would go back to where they were, not happening! Too little, too late on price gouging.

It will take time to sort all of this out. But on the morning after this horrific election outcome, well, it feels that the promise of America is at its lowest ebb in my 80 years, if not in the nation’s 250-year history. So many of our beliefs, beginning with the sense that Americans would never slam the door on democracy and simple decency and humanity have been shredded. To do so by electing a convicted felon in a country where convicted felons cannot find day work is appalling.

I know that many of my neighbors voted for Mr. Trump. I do not apologize for my deep disappoint- ment in their choice, which is the most disastrous electoral choice Americans ever have made. I just hope that as a people that we, if only a small coalition, can undo the grievous damage that has been and will be done. It will not be easy to do so. The harm could well be irreversible.

My biggest hope before the election was that the country would turn the page on this guy, move forward, and grow a nation that works for every citizen, not just for a narcissistic man and his blind cultists.

God save us, for we appear incapable of saving ouselves from our ruin. Our country has put democracy further in peril, if not thrown it away

This ranks as the saddest day in my long life of following and writing about politics.

I think you are giving "right wing reactionary" politics too much credit. The simple truth is that, in general, American men are just freaking insecure and voted for a self-serving, fascist, moron rather than the smart, capable woman. France and Great Britain both rejected the Right in recent elections.

Strawman bullshit..... I didn’t say "all men". I said "in general" which is true as a majority of men voted for The Felon. 2020 Biden would have kicked Trump’s ass again, but the female poc couldn't beat the sexism and racism.

Everyone should take a deep breath, exhale, relax and let Trump wreck his havoc. We still have freedom of speech and eventually the tide will turn. Yes, older white Americans fear persons whose cultures and customs are different from their own

No, we should not let him do anything of the sort. This is a man who has explicitly attacked freedom of speech and will enable reactionary forces (through his appointments and his pardons) who plan to do so. They have promised that they will explicitly attack protest and opposition everywhere and use the tools they have been given against the people they hate (Vance's term).

If we let it play out it will be generations before any sort of wave comes back. If we work against it now, then we may mitigate immediate harms and return the wave faster.

Also Trump won a *lot* of younger voters and nonwhite voters so it is not just the older white people.
