People need to learn how to fight back. One good thing is that coalitions of citizens who want pro-voter, pro-democracy reforms are coming together. The bad news is that it is very difficult to organize and run a nonprofit that runs on volunteer labor. I know. I'm with Better Ballot NC.
Not only what Thomas Mills of NCPolitics points out, but Bryan Anderson reports that extreme gerrymandering by NC Republicans is what handed control of the US House to the Grand Ole Party and Trump in 2024. https://substack.com/home/post/p-152575283
Same old GOP with a nasty hard right twist. The gerrymandering in NC also affects national politics. It’s the only reason republicans have a majority in the US House. We’ve got to do something! Wisconsin was the same way until people stood up and put a stop to it. When are we going to stand up for ourselves and the nation?! I know Rev Barber has been leading some protests.
Yes, he has. A couple of thousand people showed up at the statehouse to protest the power grab of SB XXX, the one that purports to deliver disaster relief to Western NC due to hurricane Helene, but in fact is aimed to strip power from the incoming, duly elected Governor Josh Stein, Lt. Governor Rachel Hunt, Superintendent of Public Instruction Mo Green, and Attorney General Jeff Jackson.
The open question is whether the Gerrymandering tainted the Republicans by isolating them from actual voters. Or whether it allowed them to finally reveal their true selves.
I spent 14 years as an election official in all roles from assistant and judge in Durham county to Chief Judge in Wake County. I've administered the application for a ballot oath to thousands of voters. In Durham County, I referred one voter to the official in charge because the voter had moved from Durham to Gaston County. I've had to give voters provisional ballots because they moved from another county into Wake or in one case from Orange County into Durham. I've registered voters at early voting in 2022. It's time for Paul Newby and Phil Berger (these are the two main culprits to recognize the efforts of hundreds of election officials in all 100 counties accept the result of this election. As one comment below notes Newby won by only 401 votes in 2020.
Cheat, lie, and steal. The motto of N.C. GOPers. They have no regard for law, for citizens rights, or for truth. Richard (insider trading) Burr was never prosecuted. Citizens tax money was used to clean up the DukeEnergy coal ash spill, a deal worked out by corrup McCrory. GOP has gerrymandered districts to the hilt. Now their trying to steal a S.C. justice seat.
I agree with Ruth Bromer that Griffin is proving just how unworthy he is of being put on our state Supreme Court. What is going on in our state is so unacceptable, and is just another nail being hammered into our democracy. I keep hoping people who have supported the Republicans will recognize that they too will be victimized by them. So far, however, I don’t see realization hitting. It’s all so very, very sad.
Mills says he hopes "that the court would assert its independence and side with the process," thus disallowing Griffin's transparent "would-be/could be" order for a new election. And in our faces, "in broad daylight." And Mills further says about our court, "[He has his] doubts." Meaning Mills--at this dispatch--has unease about our current NC court. At this moment. Knowing a thing or two about our NC Supreme Court--Mills--and knowing Mills expresses mistrust today on the issue, frankly, scares the shit out of me.
It is hard to imagine that even our Republican state Supreme Court would disenfranchise voters on such a weak pretext. I had thought that Griffin's challenge was to the myriad provisional and absentee ballots and that those ballots would have to be reassessed. I think that is happening with the close races for the General Assembly that remain unresolved. By weaking faith in our democracy in this fashion, Judge Griffin has, in my opinion, disqualified himself from serving on our highest court.
Griffin is proving how incompetent he is to be a Supreme Court Justice. Anyone who wants to not accept the votes of the citizens by trying to throw legitimate votes out is not someone who should hold any office, let alone a top Justice. Even some of his fellow Republicans are having their votes questioned. What in the world is happening to our country, to our constitution, to our democracy?
It has been going on longer than a decade.
Do you know how I find the list? I’m in Greensboro and want to check. I’ve looked on Riggs’ website but couldn’t find it. Thank you!
Thanks Thomas.
In ugly situations like this, I harken back to the Red Scare hearings in the ‘50s.
During the hearings Joseph Welch asked Joe McCarthy
“Have you no sense of decency, sir?
At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”
I would ask Judge Griffin these questions.
If he answered truthfully, the answer would be no.
How low can the North Carolina Republican party go?
Can’t answer that, they’re still digging.

Class action suit?
What counter-tactics by the Riggs side are in action?

Board of elections rejected Griffin’s challenge. The ballots will stay.

Both and more.

I am so so sick of these Republicans!
