the phone numbers for Mike Clampitt (919) 715-3005, Karl Gillespie (919) 733-5859, Mark Pless (919) 733-5732. I have called and left messages for all three, thanking them for opposing the bill as it is written, and for standing up for a stand alone bill to help their constituents. I have urged them to help the Governor thwart a veto overide should it come to that and to support a stand alone bill to help their constituents. I urge you and anyone you can reach (Dem, Rep and Ind) to do the same.
SURELY nobody really expects anything else from the GOP -- in North Carolina (where I used to live for many years), in Kansas (where I am now), or indeed in virtually any state or territory you could name. I remain in touch with several decades-long friends in Chapel Hill or nearby communities (e.g., Holly Springs). EVERYBODY I hear from mistrusts the Republicans (aka Trumpists) in that state to do anything helpful for them -- only bowing to the needs of right-wing Trump supporters.
Indeed: More publicity from Democrats about the power grab. Republican leadership will twist Clampett, Gillespie and Pless's arms pretty tightly to override, Thomas
We must be frank with ourselves. Members of that group are going to the extreme everywhere, every time, every way they can. While we can disagree about whether it began with Trump, the Tea Party or Reagan, we see today the extreme grasping for power consistent and pervasive up and down the ladder. We CANNOT win with allowing ourselves to expect that "norms will prevail." We must fight them as they fight people's health and welfare. Their fight. Their battlefield. Their weapons. Indivisible turned their weapons into useful change tools. Our common sense can crush their corruption.
Thom Tillis is an interesting character. He has been outspoken in saying that there will be a Senate confirmation hearing for Matt Gaetz. I think we should support Thom in his occasional independence. If only he had voted to convict in the Second Impeachment as Richard Burr did, we might not be in this pickle. It will be a pity when Trump primaries Thom with a full on MAGA candidate when Thom is up for re-election in 2026. Hindsight is always 2020. Shoulda, coulda. MiItch McConnell probably feels the same way.
And also kudos to the Mountain Republicans who want a clean aid bill. I suspect that Moore and Berger may increase the amount of hurricane aid in order to get their votes for a veto override.
Tom, the GOP's desire for power is reaching new levels in stupidity. They are currently struggling to force a bill through requiring local Sheriff's to become immigration officials. Called the "papers please bill" it will force US Citizens to carry identification verifying their status. I am reminded of a 1980s comedy Born in East LA., Rudy Robles, played by Cheech Marin, is a proud American citizen living in East Los Angeles. When he goes to a local factory to pick up his cousin, he finds himself caught in an immigration raid. Despite his repeated claims of being an American, he is unable to produce identification and is subsequently deported to Mexico.
Stranded in a country where he doesn't speak the language or understand the culture, Rudy must navigate through various comedic challenges to find a way back to the United States.
NC Republicans enacted legislation that could make the movie plot of Born In East LA into a real scenario. Senate Bill 101, which critics dubbed the "Show Me Your Papers", would have required sheriffs to inform U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement if they cannot determine the citizenship of person, they may have reason to come into contact.
If this is making America great again, than a lot of GOP politicians need to return to the fourth grade and study the US Constitution on basic human rights and dignity.

Could not agree more. I am going to encourage my community to let these Republican legislators we appreciate their efforts.

This suggestion is worth repeating: “Democrats should start using these shenanigans to portray Republicans as more interested in power than people.”
