Thomas: sad to see you have been seduced into supporting and encouraging the “maybe it’s time for no Joe” narrative. The more pundits like you suggest our President might not run, the tougher you make it for him to win.
I don't necessarily believe that, but I believe it's the campaign's responsibility to change the narrative and they've ignored that responsibility for too long. They can't keep him out of the public eye except for videos for an entire election and hope to win it.
Joe Biden is a very likable, down-to-earth sort of guy. I think he would excel in a regular televised Fireside Chat format. I really don’t know why presidents did not continue that after FDR.
Democrats need to get better at tooting their own horn, because the press certainly isn’t going to do it for them.
Of course he’s likable and down-to-earth. That’s not the problem. And Democrats have had plenty of time to make clear the quite real achievements of Biden. It’s late in the day for chats by the fire. Quite frankly I’m quite put off knowing Biden has taken no preemptive action long before now to pass the torch forthrightly.
For me, it’s Deja vu all over again. The media focus on Biden’s age is like its fanatical obsession with Hillary’s emails, and we know what that wrought. I fear Biden himself may be steering his campaign messaging with a naive belief that voters’ knowing he’s a better choice than Trump will win him the election. Mike Dukakis refused to let us respond forcefully to the Willie Horton attacks because he refused to believe voters would fall for the lie.
Thomas is right. Loyalty to winning the presidency this November requires us to ask if we really have the best candidate at the top of our ticket, one who will forcefully prosecute the campaign. Sure, Biden has proven to be more effective at getting more pieces of important legislation passed than any president since FDR. And on his worst days a much better president than Trump ever was, or ever could be. But, let’s be honest. With all his achievements, who among us isn’t disheartened by his administration’s failure to communicate them to the public?
If only what Biden has accomplished as president that was enough to beat Trump….
I also do not think Biden's mentality acuity is lacking. Although I take issue that Biden and advisors are so inept at reading tea leaves not to known long before now "something different" was going to be required. Especially since the January 6th report/presentations failed to create even a ripple despite horrific, unspeakable acts that happened. Everyone saw and then saw again. This should have been a clue to ALL, regardless of party, we have one hell of a mess. As far as waiting for better messaging, that ship got lost in Mr. Peabody's Wayback Machine. I think we are seeing history repeat the ugly parts of our American past we as a nation have never squarely or rightly faced.
