It isn't because they keep losing something so they have to double and triple down. At the end of the day the problem is that people don't want what they are selling so they have to resort to ever more extreme limits to keep other silent.
I was a reporter covering government and politics between 1972 and 1980. The main culprit is the loss of circulation and advertising revenue at daily newspapers. McClatchy, the owner of both the N&O and Charlotte Observer at one time had to file for bankruptcy (it may be out of that now). I emailed Karen Brinson Bill and congratulated her on her letter writing abilities and I am sending a copy of this column to her as well. I served 14 years as an election official in Durham and Wake Counties (including two years as a chief judge in a Wake County precinct).
Perhaps we should start writing letters to publishers and editors asking why reporters don’t hold people like Berger accountable. Perhaps ‘letters to the editor’ should have an equally large space in the paper entitled “Editors Answers to Questions in Letters”.
"Too much of the legacy media is spending too much energy serving as stenographers or trying to see both sides instead of asking the tough questions." What are they teaching in journalism school these days?
It seems the medias biggest concern is access and not the truth. Of course all of the other races were fine just the close one that a democrat won is a problem. We are in a bad place.
I think reporters are more lazy than they should be. Instead of doing the work of digging for the truth, it seems they mainly seek free access by acquiescing to whatever their subjects feed them. They’re getting access to nothing of value that way.
Good question from Sandra Campbell - exactly WHAT is being taught in journalism school?
See answer. That and “How to ask questions that won’t require a real answer” and “How to Look Smart and Professional at a News Conference” and How to Use SpellCheck if You Have Time.”
I guess being the most gerrymandered state in the nation just isn’t enough for the GQP.

I agree with every word you’ve written here. But I feel we try to be fair and balanced while they fight like Laertes with poisoned, sharpened swords.
Republicans are infuriating!
That's putting it nicely.
Thomas, it's starting to feel like we all need to start storing water and canned goods.
Berger is what one would call a, how can I put this gingerly… “piece of shit”.

Stenography 101

Well said Thom! It is past time for the Media writ large to do their damn jobs and start asking questions.
Way, way, way past time. It’s glaringly infuriating to see/hear media discourse as lame as it has become.
