The GOP is a full throated fascist movement now. 'America First' was just that in the 1930's with white supremacist and Nazi sympathizer Charles Lindbergh as it's spokesperson instead of DJT. The millionaires of the 30's were hostile to the New Deal and attracted to the fascists because, as Mussolini described it, fascism is the merging of corporate and state power. Now we have billionaire Elon Musk shouting out to AFD and going full Dr. StrangeLove at the inauguration of an illegitimate treasonous insurrectionist who is signing executive orders written by the authors of Project 2025, a blueprint for a fascist theocracy. Thom Tillis's feeble objections are total bs because he has been on this path his entire career.
Thank you, Tom, for highlighting this issue. The GOP's strategy is indeed cunning. The case will proceed through the judicial process, starting with a hearing in Wake County Superior Court. The North Carolina Supreme Court did not expedite the case, so lower courts will decide on voter exclusion over the coming months, with the State Supreme Court making the final decision.
This could potentially disenfranchise a large block of Democratic voters statewide near election time.
Historically, similar tactics were used in Harper v. Virginia Board of Elections (1966) and Shelby County v. Holder (2013). It is important to remember that the 15th Amendment prevents states from disenfranchising voters based on race, color, or previous servitude.
The issue of failing to follow the guidelines which come into existence after a voter registered may be an issue that must be decided by the US Supreme Court. However, given the current US Supreme Court, which appears favorable to such tactics, I would not recommend holding our breath!
Well for one thing, we must circulate the works of current, relatable, knowledgeable, astute writers, thinkers, and artists. And some good people I know say it's unwise to discuss politics and religion. Fuck that. We must in discreet, overt, even cunning ways, depending upon context, tune in the tuned out. Engage suckers who wasted their votes on ugly. The work ahead is a challenge to map because we are "creating" in this moment, as Mills says is dark. Encounters with others matter more. Stay grounded; stand the ground of our shared beloved NC and our nation. Rally to the tune of Marianne Edgar Budde.
Help me understand the remedy in the Griffin case. Assume that the courts rule that the registrations of the 60,000 are invalid. Then what? No one knows how any of these improper voters actually cast their ballot. There is no way to deduct the invalidated votes from the total. The only remedy would be for a complete redo of the election. Right?
Yes, where is Bob Orr or Pat McCrory for that matter. Time to remind Paul Newby that the same post election process was used to certify his 401 vote victory over Cheri Beasley in 2020. Also Google Walt Disney cartoon from the Second World War staring Donald Duck:When the Fuhrer Says We Is The Master Race: very relevant
Amen - Authoritarianism thrives on creating feelings of powerlessness, undermining democracy by stifling empathy. A strategy of chaos aims to disrupt freedom and the rule of law, but we must maintain focus on the bigger picture. We must engage actively with our communities, fostering strong relationships with neighbors & friends.
We also need to promote positive messages. We must stand for courage, decency, & optimism as we work to preserve freedom & democracy. The journey will be long & challenging, but celebrating victories, no matter how small, fuels our optimism & spirit.
That is why they added the threat of punishment if you do not disclose. Their plan is to use this to round up everyone, everyone but the rat-like men who are so weak that they will point fingers at everyone else until they scurry alone.
You're right, we should not obey. But that's easier suggested than done. I fear gov't employees will follow "orders" because they rightly fear the consequences Trump.inc can instigate against them. The rest of us not in the grip must do all we can to resist.
Trump inc can simply fire them. That is the plan. They need an excuse to purge everyone and replacing people who fail to disclose "vague language" is one way to do it.
“We’re entering into dark days.” I’ll finish reading this post once I settle my disturbed soul. I’ve been rereading bell hooks lately who says “to live to love is heroic.” And think those who live to HATE know nothing about love. And to have reigns of power and live to hate. Yes. Dark days are here. I apologize to respond and run without a careful reading. Got to go soothe soul in Tai Chi class….

The GoP in NC knows nothing but cheating and lying!

Thanks for keeping us aware of these threats to workers who don't turn in their neighbors like the McCarthy era blacklistings.

Where is Bob Orr?
He’s no longer commenting on anything. This is exactly the kind of thing he would be repudiating the gop for doing!

Wasn't it Sgt. Schultz, of Hogan's Heroes, who always said, "I know nothing!"? We should all be Sgt. Schultz..........................

Absolutely. Resistance starts now on all fronts.
