I had no idea, but it explains so much about Griffin and his disrespect for the citizens of North Carolina. It explains why he thinks these votes from mostly minorities should be thrown out, but only for his race. These voters' ballots aren't being threatened for any other race last November, only Griffin’s. Only he is so 'SPECIAL'. And he really only cares to count the votes in 4 Democratic leaning districts, not the rest. As I've said before, he should be removed from the Court of Appeals and he should be disbarred.

As someone who did go through that journey of personal reckoning I can testify it's not the easiest, but your soul is better by the end of it.

Excellent piece, Thomas. As we work through whatever the future holds for us, the MOST important question we must ask is, "Where would we be had we punished the traitors after the American Civil War?" Had we stuck to American values and hanged Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis, we might have set up a society that would have rejected the Trump-Putin-Musk alliance that is destroying our country.

It’s almost certain we wouldn't be having these stupid arguments about naming rights to military bases an and elementary schools, because the people they’re named for would have been denounced as the traitors they were had we followed what the law says — then and now.

Very well reasoned, very well written, and very presient for our times. Great work, Thomas. Keep it up!

Absolutely on target explication of the South and how its class-based feudalistic systems were never uprooted properly. One way to have done so is for the Democratic party to have NOT abandoned the fight. It was a massive mistake not to keep Democrats viable in places like Texas. It was completely foreseeable that absolute power would corrupt absolutely.

And now, the Old South mentality has become the prevailing political framework of the Republican Party. And that party has captured national government. This arrogant, ignorant, anti-intellectual tripe that passes for white people entitlement will be the death of this country. Literally.

That is, unless we band together and put a stop to the old planter gambit of setting poor whites off against blacks. We must fight the power and get up every day figuring out how to stick it to the man.

Thank you for drawing a distinction between racism and classism. While both have been present from the get-go, too often, it seems, the sins have been chalked up simply to racism.

Brooke Harrington, sociologist, has written tellingly of how the uber rich not only escape taxes that would benefit the country, but cleave society into two halves that can't even imagine the lives of the other side, which causes resentment on one side and lack of empahy on the other. (She studied two years to become a financial advisor to the rich, if not famous, in order to even do the research, it's such a closed world.)

"Capital Without Borders" is her 2015 book; "Offshore - Stealth, Wealth and the New Colonialism" is the new book. Neither are anti-wealth screeds, by the way.

Oh yeah. Next to last paragraph in this dispatch tells the tale.

Hear, hear! Those of us who were Southern born and bred and who had a long and sometimes painful journey to see with new eyes the white privilege and racist society in which we were living and who began to understand what it would take to change things and to build a more perfect union must not cave now. In fact, we again have to be as brave as some were in the 60's who endured beatings, water guns, real guns, and death. We cannot concede to the intimidation of our lying narcissistic demagogue co-presidents!

Anybody ever notice how much Griffin looks like Alfred E. Neuman? Uncanny.

Perhaps all North Carolinians should leave the optional ethnicity question blank when they update their registration due to a name or address change to help fight vote screening?

It would be far more effective to reject these relics of a shameful past. Confederates alive today don’t want women or brown people or anyone who isn’t a straight, white Christian man to have a say in our government. No form is going to fix that.

No disagreement, but I’m not the statue maven or fort name decider. Just trying to tweak what is in my personal power.

Thank you Thomas. When Bryan Anderson I believe helped break the story, the background was noted a bit.

BUT your wise deep dive on the background is greatly appreciated.
